5 Tips for Finding a Job You LOVE in This Economy

Before having moved to San Francisco, I worked as an External Corporate Recruiter in NYC. Needless to say, I reviewed thousands of resumes, interviewed hundreds of candidates, and worked closely with employers of large and small companies to figure out exactly what it was that made them desire one candidate over hundreds of others.

So here some pointers that I have learned along the way that will hopefully make your job search much more effective and possibly enjoyable (which are both helpful in an economy like this):

  • Resumes are old news

    . Yes, employers still use them as a quick seeding out process but does anyone’s resume really show their true potential? I say, don’t let a piece of paper define who you are. I’ve seen the most success from job seekers showing up to the employers office, introducing themselves, and handing out their resume in person. I know what you’re thinking… that is sooooo old school. Yes it may be, however, networking is back big time and what a better way to show the employer that you’re interested than to show up looking professional, giving the employer a true taste of your charming personality, great communication skills, and pure ambition. I tried this tactic after moving to SF (right after the economy went to crap). I walked away from an introduction having received a verbal offer on the spot. It may scare some of you but the bottom line is IT WORKS.

  • Show good follow-up skills

    . There is no need to elaborate on this one. If you find a job that you feel you would be a good fit for, be a pest. Be so persistent that the employer feels the need to talk with you just to see what you’re all about, or even just to give you an update on the role. Employers admire persistence in job seekers.

  • Focus your job search on your passions

    . If it’s truly your passion, then you will be great with what you do and money will follow. So many people get stuck in a rut - whether it’s the money rut or the rut where they get pigeonholed into an industry that they hate. It’s not worth the misery that comes with it. The best way to find a job that you’re passionate about is two fold:

    1. Volunteer for something that has to do with your interests
    2. Network, network, network (remember: it’s never inappropriate to ask for an introduction)
  • Strike up conversations with everyone. Whether you’re on a flight, riding the bus, or at a coffee shop (if you’re in SF, I recommend

    ), let people know what you’re all about and figure out what they do as well. You’ll be surprised at how many people may be able to help you. They may be hiring for something that interests you, or they may know someone who could refer you along. There is nothing sweeter than an internal referral or a referral from a friend. It’s like getting a VIP pass to your favorite sold out concert. There’s no waiting in the line to get recognized, there is no wasting time dealing with all the people ahead of you, and best of all, when you finally get in, the people you’re dealing with treat you with more respect. Surprisingly, you’ll find that you get more results this way than if you spend all day applying to jobs on

    . Being a recruiter, I have experienced that when applying to jobs online, most companies do not view your application right away. It can take some up to 6 weeks to even open your resume. WASTE OF TIME. Take the less traveled but more effective road and talk to people, because you never know how they may be able to help you.

  • Most importantly, be yourself

    . Search for opportunities that would make YOU happy. Don’t worry about the societal norms, your friends and family, etc. You’re the one who has to go to work every day. Enjoy it. Just because you’re job searching doesn’t mean you’re desperate. Don’t jump on the first thing that comes to you unless it’s a great fit. Make sure it’s what YOU want to do.
